TARS EAST LITERARY DAY

URC Meeting Room, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1NR
This was a new venture for TARS East, at a new - and excellent - venue: the URC Rooms in Bury.  15 TARS, including an intrepid junior, had a splendid half-day, starting with an exhibition of Robert Thompson's collection of translations of the Master's books into 18 languages:-
Robert gave the first talk, tahing us through the multitude of translation styles, particularly the sometime querky illustrations!

His talk raised a number of interesting questions, particularly how a translator of AR's books, the magical element of which is that the adventures and their locations are believable and in principle actionable, can satisfactorily convey this to an alien culture, and keep it relevant to youngsters.
During lunch, our Chairman, Laurence Monkhouse, led a fiendishly difficult quiz
This was won - spectacularly - by our intepid Junior, Timothy, who was overcome
with such modesty on receiving his prize:-
Finally, Brian Hammett recounted how his researches into AR and Evgenia in the Baltic had led him into unexpected discoveries including the MS of Racundra's Third Cruise.
